How to be productive while working from home.

Working from home is the new norm. I’ve had to readjust the way I view work, particularly in regards to working for myself. Being home all day and having my home become my place of work has had me go a bit stir crazy and I struggle with getting more done.

As a way to make sure I get the most out of my work time and small space I’ve researched and tested out a few tips; here’s what’s working so far. As a result, I found these key things.

Schedule

Create a game plan for your workflow- knowing what you’re going to do helps you get the most out of your day and minimise distractions. I noticed most productive days are when I’m intentional about my actions and start with my curated morning routine.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Break up the Day-⠀Taking breaks is paramount and is actually known to boost productivity. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Have clear boundaries- Have work hours suitable for your life situation and communicate well with your community about times you will be doing focused work.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Ignore the cleaning -if you can’t, set a time to do it quickly.

Dress Code

Get out of your pyjamas and dress sensibly. Even though comfort is ideal, wearing pyjamas send a message of relaxation to your body. I usually wear leggings and a t-shirt. When it’s cold, I will wear a gown that I have decided is my work gown. ⠀

Environment

Have a set area to work on- when you have a “place of work” it’s easy to get your mind to focus when sitting at the place.

Avoid working from your bed 🛏️-

It is not ideal for your sleep. The power of association dictates that your brain needs to associate your bed with sleep.
It is adverse to your posture and causes back and wrist pain.
It is not ideal for your computer since ventilation is needed for your computer to function optimally.⠀

Co-working

Join a virtual co-working group- you can find these on Facebook. Personally, I love having accountability and it’s helpful to know you have someone who you can count on to help you.

Bonus Tip: Be flexible, things happen and life changes quickly. Best lesson of 2020. Make sure you have a plan for when meetings are cancelled or for when days you feel uninspired to work.
